3. Anne Mathieson (Ane)

Ane Mathieson co-founded and co-directs the EMPOWER Centre, a multi-disciplinary medical, legal, social service centre in New York City for survivors of the sex trade. Ane has spent her career advancing the rights of women and girls, with a focus on strengthening legal protections and services for survivors of commercial sexual exploitation. After completing a Fulbright fellowship in Sweden, Ane published her research on international prostitution policy models in the Seattle University Law Review. This publication has become a critical tool for legislators and advocates seeking to strengthen state and federal trafficking laws in the U.S.. Returning to the U.S., Ane obtained a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Washington. Subsequent fellowships with the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women—Asia Pacific, in the Philippines; and the Centre for Women in Government and Civil Society, in the U.S.; cemented her commitment to a career focused on advancing peace and justice for women and girls on a global scale through policy advocacy. As a Rotary Peace Fellow, Ane intends to acquire strategic tools to prevent femicide and sexual violence during times of both peace and civil unrest.
